Digimon Adventure Thoughts - A Braindump
DISCLAIMER: I DON'T WANT ANYONE THINKING THIS IS A PROPER CRITIQUE OF THE SEASON. Some of the things I mention here might be because of bias or just salt, and would change if i actually did research for a critique. these are just lingering thoughts i had after watching the season.
Not a proper critique, but I watched the first Digimon season for the first time, and here are some thoughts that stuck out to me that I wanted to just ramble about here.
SPOILERS (obviously)
Start Date - Series Completion (not encluding extras ie. movies, cd dramas etc.): 09/15/20 - 09/22/20
The songs were pretty banger and the character development was good. It's just I guess there were too many characters to flesh everyone out, but it was still pretty good.
Gomamon always teasing Jyou is so funny
Alot of the later half with Devimon as the main villain were really boring and badly paced. it just felt like half the season was filler, and I was kinda only watching it for Jyou (I really related to his character and he is just funny in general) at some point.
The villains didn't have good motivations but at least Etemon and Pinocchimon (MAN JUST NONCHALANTLY MENTIONS A MAGNUM 44 AND A DUMDUM BULLET TO THE AUDIENCE) were entertaining as F.
Tailmon could have been really interesting with being a villian --> good guy but everything was just so rushed I didn't like her as much as I wanted to
i really like koushirou but i feel like he's kinda too perfect compared to everyone else (he like carried the entire technical side of everything) aside the fact that he is a bit too invested into learning new things
HIKARI IS OP, but i like her English voice in the first digimon shortfilm.
no buildup to the main villain, or any villain for that matter. they're just thrown at u for no reason
too many villains (??)
I still cant get over the devimon/dark masters arc. they're supposed to be intimidating but all of them are just really fucking boring aside from pinocchimon
the only thing I liked about piedmon was the little keychains of the protagonists. those were so cute. also seen in toy form via pinocchimon
also at the end of the season i literally couldn't take like 2 episodes without jyou ik that's bias but i personally felt like everything was more entertaining with him around as comic relief
taichi and yamato fighting... GODDAMN they just lay hands whenever one of them are being dramatic (which isn't nessesarily a bad thing)
the style for the hosoda shortfilms are like.. actually gorgeous. its flat and muted character colouring over the detailed bgs makes me go <333. its my favourite style in all of the franchise and I might steal some aspects I like from it sometime.
just look at the difference between the desk & the main focus. very pleasing to the eye
BTW i watched the entire series in a little over a week so i may not have properly digested everything :P
